Could Vitamin D Help Us Survive Covid-19?
A number of recent press reports have linked vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19. Public Health England, NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and Public Health Scotland are carrying out reviews and assessing evidence as a result.
The main source of vitamin D is sunlight, whilst some foods also contain the vitamin. According to leading nutritional therapist, Julie Silver, “The foods that contain the most vitamin D are egg yolks, mushrooms, cod liver oil and fish; mainly herring, salmon, sardines. You can also get cereals, milk, soya milk and orange juice fortified with this vitamin.”
Dennis Gore, famous community pharmacist and founder of Dennis the Chemist, has seen a massive upsurge in sales of their popular HuxD3. He offers the following advice for people concerned about their levels. “Many people’s vitamin D levels may be be depleted as we’ve all been indoors much more. So ensure that you spend short periods outside in the sunshine (without sunscreen) with your forearms exposed, to enable your body to start manufacturing its own vitamin D. Please note that we all still need to wear sun protection, including sunscreen, to protect ourselves from skin damage, skin cancer and ageing, when we are out for long periods.”
Dennis continues, “To help build up our supplies of vitamin D at this vital time, it’s important to take a regular supplement. To ensure maximum absorption, a high-grade supplement such as HuxD3 should be taken with the largest meal of the day. HuxD3 is especially beneficial as it’s a superior form of the vitamin that contains ingredients that are all food sourced. Food sourced vitamins are preferable as they are in a form that the body recognises, so will be more easily absorbed.”
HuxD3 is a high strength vitamin D (colecalciferol or D3) food supplement. It is free from common allergens and is compliant with Halal diet requirements. The ingredients are suitable for vegetarian diets and the vitamin D is sourced from the wool of living sheep only.
